Types of Cavity Wall Insulation

1. Mineral Wool Insulation

Rockwool mineral wool insulation, a type of mineral wool that includes glass wool and rock wool, is a top choice for cavity wall insulation. Made from natural materials, it delivers outstanding thermal and acoustic insulation. Additionally, rockwool mineral wool is fire-resistant and offers excellent moisture control properties, making it a reliable and versatile option for your insulation needs.

2. Polystyrene Beads

Another excellent option our installers occasionally use is polystyrene beads. These lightweight, small balls are blown into the cavity to deliver effective insulation. They provide impressive thermal performance and can be installed quickly. Additionally, polystyrene beads are resistant to moisture and pests, ensuring a durable and long-lasting solution.

3. Polyurethane Foam

Polyurethane foam is a high-performance insulation material that expands to fill cavities completely, offering excellent thermal resistance and effectively sealing gaps to prevent air leakage. It is also resistant to moisture and can provide added structural support to walls. However, its use has become less common due to its reputation for being ‘messy’ and potentially causing damage to walls. For these reasons, Fairway Energy chooses not to use polyurethane foam for insulation.

4. Urea Formaldehyde Foam

Urea formaldehyde foam is an on-site mixed insulation that is injected into cavities, offering good thermal performance at a relatively low cost. However, it has drawbacks, including the potential to shrink over time and release formaldehyde, which raises concerns for some homeowners. For these reasons, Fairway Energy does not utilize this type of insulation.
